Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is a part of the Qassim College of Medicine, Qassim University and is one of the main departments contributing to teaching in its program. It is located in the main campus of Qassim University. Qassim College of Medicine is the first College to adopt teaching of therapeutics in the preclinical phase in KSA, in addition to teaching classical pharmacology. The department has a long-standing tradition of excellence in undergraduate education. The atmosphere of the department is one of congeniality and collaboration. Members of the department are engaged in teaching in diverse areas of contemporary pharmacology as well as in research. They are experts in both traditional teaching and in small group learning. They teach using a mixture of lectures, practical and small-group tutorials together with case-based teaching of therapeutics.

Teaching of therapeutics to undergraduate students start early in the second year. Students are exposed to clinical scenarios simulating real cases where there is integration between basic sciences. Students are then taught how to prescribe appropriate drugs using National and International treatment guidelines, formularies, textbooks and other sources of drug information. Faculty members in the Department have diverse research interests. These research topics are fundamental to determining the uses and safety of drugs. Thus students obtain a broad educational background.

Community service is of particular concern to the Department. Members of the department help improve health of the community through delivering lectures and encouraging students to engage in community services right from the start. In particular, raising awareness of the community with the proper use of drugs, their adverse effects and the danger of drug abuse.

Goals:

  1. Providing quality undergraduate education in pharmacology and therapeutics for medical students

  2. Educating and training undergraduate students to carry out basic research of recognized excellence.

  3. Developing attitude for continuous self-learning and self-assessment throughout the whole of practicing life.

  4. Raising the awareness of the community with the proper use of drugs, their adverse effects and the danger of drug misuse.
